14K Gold-Plated Jewelry: Specification and QC Guide

IN THIS GUIDE

“14K gold-plated” describes a gold-color plating direction; it does not by itself define the complete product quality standard. B2B buyers should specify the base metal, surface preparation, plating requirements, color reference, construction and inspection method.

This guide focuses on order specifications. For broader base-metal and plating concepts, read Truli’s gold-plated jewelry quality guide.

Define the base metal

State whether the product uses sterling silver, brass or stainless steel. The base metal and construction affect surface preparation, weight, soldered areas and the process used before plating.

Clarify what 14K refers to

In this context, 14K refers to the gold composition or color direction used for the plated layer, not a claim that the whole product is solid 14K gold. Product descriptions, labels and quotations should keep that distinction clear.

Specify surface preparation

Polishing, cleaning and preparation influence the final appearance. Define whether surfaces should be bright polished, matte, brushed or textured, and identify areas where tool marks or residue are unacceptable.

Set color and thickness requirements

Approve plating color against a physical sample or controlled reference where possible. If a specific plating thickness is required, record the agreed measurement and testing method for that order rather than assuming a universal standard.

Control construction before plating

Posts, clasps, hinges, soldering and moving parts should be checked before and after plating. Poor alignment or rough joints cannot be solved by color alone.

Describe CZ and pearl details accurately

Truli’s current stone-set products use CZ unless pearl or synthetic opal is verified. Do not describe CZ as natural stone or gemstone. Record the decoration and any masking or setting requirements.

Approve samples under consistent light

Compare color, gloss, texture and coverage using the same lighting and reference. Review recessed areas, joints, edges, chain links and matched pairs. Record corrections by SKU.

Production QC checklist

  • Base metal and construction
  • Surface preparation
  • Approved 14K gold color reference
  • Agreed thickness or test requirement
  • Coverage at joints and recessed areas
  • CZ, pearl or synthetic opal details
  • Functional component checks
  • Pair matching, cleanliness and packaging

Use supportable care language

Provide care instructions that match the verified product and finish. Avoid universal waterproof, hypoallergenic, permanent-color or fixed-lifespan promises unless supported for the exact item and conditions.

A complete specification turns “14K gold-plated” from a broad label into a measurable product requirement.
